Humana Announces 2009 Utah Benefits Charity Awards

$100,000 Grant Will Be Awarded to a Utah Nonprofit Organization

SALT LAKE CITY--()--Many of the nation’s nonprofit organizations, including those that provide health care, education and arts programming, depend on corporate support to meet the needs of their clients. According to a recent survey by the Conference Board, however, more than 60 percent of companies have either reduced their giving or plan to during 2009.

“Because of this money, we were able to open a new center significantly closer to more than 400 families who otherwise would have to travel up to an extra hour round trip to take advantage of our services.”

Today, health-benefits company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) is helping to tilt the scale in the other direction by offering Utah charities the chance to apply for a one-time, $100,000 grant in the second annual Utah Benefits charitable awards program.

The program — designed to give local not-for-profit charitable organizations the opportunity to receive a one-time infusion of funding to create new programs or enhance ongoing activities — is open to 501(c)(3) organizations in Utah that address the mind, body or spirit of local residents.

“The Utah Benefits charitable awards program allows Humana to give back to the organizations that provide essential support to our communities,” said Earl F. Hurst, president of Humana of Utah. “Through our commitment to the local not-for-profit organizations, Humana hopes to inspire others — individual donors and corporations — to lend a hand to the organizations that mean something special to them as well.”

All nonprofit organizations interested in learning about the application process for the 2009 program are encouraged to attend the Utah Benefits Kick-off Breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, at Humana of Utah (9815 Monroe St., Suite 300, Snowbird Conference Room, Sandy, UT 84070).

Please RSVP by e-mailing your name, organization name, telephone number and e-mail address to utahbenefits@humana.com or call (801) 256-6299. Applications for the grant are also available at www.utahbenefits.humana.com.

A panel of local judges, composed of community leaders, public officials and business representatives, will work with Humana to select the $100,000 grant winner. Humana will recognize the winner at a celebratory award presentation in October.

To be considered, organizations must submit an application by July 10, 2009.

Utah-based nonprofit organizations are encouraged to visit www.utahbenefits.humana.com to download a copy of this year’s application and review program guidelines. Questions can also be directed to Humana by calling (801) 256-6299.

The Utah Benefits charitable awards program began last year and awarded grants to three area charities. Kids On The Move, a nonprofit organization fostering the physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth of young children with special needs, won the signature $100,000 award, enabling the organization to open a satellite center for families in western Utah County. Two semi-finalists — the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society — each received a $10,000 grant.

“Kids On The Move is so grateful for Humana’s generous grant of $100,000 and how those funds have helped us to improve the services we provide to the community,” said Stuart Collyer, executive director of Kids On The Move. “Because of this money, we were able to open a new center significantly closer to more than 400 families who otherwise would have to travel up to an extra hour round trip to take advantage of our services.”
