HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Houston area charities can apply for a $100,000 grant in the fourth annual Houston Benefits charitable awards program, created and funded by health benefits company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM). The program is designed to give local not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), charitable organizations the opportunity to receive a one-time infusion of funding in order to create new programs or enhance ongoing activities to benefit the mind, body or spirit of the greater Houston area residents. Applications for the grant are available at www.houstonbenefits.org.

"Now in its fourth year, Humana has seen the Houston Benefits award enable meaningful change for vital community needs," said Pattie Dale Tye, president of Humana of Houston. Having and funding exemplary organizations like past Houston Benefits winners Texas Center for the Missing, SIRE and El Centro de Corazon make Houston a better, healthier place for all of us to share.

Houston Benefits is open to 501(c)(3) organizations located in the Houston metropolitan area that address the mind, body or spirit of local residents. All non-profit organizations interested in submitting a grant are encouraged to attend the Houston Benefits kick off breakfast on December 14 at 9 a.m. at 1990 Post Oak Boulevard, Suite 120 to learn about writing the proposal. Please RSVP to houstonbenefits@humana.org or call 713-513-4929.

A panel of local judges, comprised of community leaders, public officials and business representatives, will work with Humana to select the $100,000 grant winner. Humana will recognize the winner at a celebratory spring 2008 award presentation.

Past recipients of the Houston Benefits awards:

  • Texas Center for the Missing, an organization providing support for families, law enforcement and volunteers searching for missing children, used the $100,000 to launch a Mobile Search and Education Lab to help educate law enforcement officers and children and to be used as a mobile command center during abductions.
  • SIRE, Houstons Therapeutic Equestrian Center, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities using horseback riding, opened a new riding area in Spring, Texas, with the Houston Benefits grant.
  • El Centro de Corazon, a womens health and pediatric care clinic located in East Houston, used the grant to furnish a Clinica de Mujeras (women's clinic) for obstetrics services.
