Humana Associates Exceed Pledge Goal to Reduce Personal Carbon Footprint

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) today announced that its associates will save more than 18 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions by participating in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR campaign. Thanks to thousands of associates pledging to save energy through small changes in everyday activities, Humana was able to exceed its pledge goal.

“Humana is committed to protecting our environment and helping to make our planet sustainable for future generations,” said Chuck Lambert, vice president of associate and business services at Humana. “That’s why we strongly encouraged and supported our associates’ involvement in this campaign. We are proud that so many of them have decided to pledge their personal commitments to environmental responsibility.”

The Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR campaign includes a growing community of corporations, utilities, manufacturers, individuals, and many others who have made a commitment to change the world by pledging to take actions that save energy, save money, and help fight global warming.

Humana supported the ENERGY STAR campaign through an extensive internal communications drive designed to educate associates about environmental responsibility and inspire them to take energy-saving steps at home. In this way, Humana will help facilitate the savings of more than 9.9 million kWh of energy and more than $1.4 million dollars in energy costs.

“Taking simple, everyday actions that save energy can change the world,” said Ann Bailey of EPA. “Humana’s continued efforts to encourage others to take the ENERGY STAR pledge have proven to be an invaluable contribution to preserve energy resources and help protect our environment.”

If every American household took part in the pledge, the EPA says it would save more than 110 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, more than $18 billion in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 18 million cars.

Humana is committed to doing its part to make the planet a healthier place. Through corporate policies, grassroots efforts, associate involvement, and member outreach, Humana associates work to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and live lightly on the land. A Healthy Planet is part of Humana’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of its members, associates, the communities the company serves, and our planet.

About ENERGY STAR

ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 50 different kinds of products as well as new homes and buildings. Products that have earned the ENERGY STAR designation reduce greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the government.
