Humana to fund new multigenerational playground in city where PGA TOUR event spectators take most steps
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies, is bringing its popular Humana Walkit Challenge back to multiple PGA TOUR stops in 2013, encouraging people nationwide to live healthier lives and support their local communities.
Humana is distributing pedometers on-site at 12 PGA TOUR events and encouraging golf fans to track their steps during the four days of the tournament they attend. The tournament at which spectators take the most steps will win the 2013 Humana Walkit Challenge – resulting in the construction of a Humana-funded multigenerational playground from Humana and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit that has built more than 2,200 playgrounds across the U.S.

The winning community will receive a multigenerational playground that creates a lasting neighborhood legacy – promoting healthy play and lifelong well-being. In addition to traditional kid-friendly elements like swings or slides, the unique playground will feature senior- and adult-focused components – such as fitness stations and walking paths to promote good posture, balance and flexibility – to create a truly multi-generational space.

Also returning as part of Humana’s ongoing effort to challenge people to get active is the Humana Well-Being Tour, which features a 53-foot tractor trailer complete with biometric stations and health-driven activities to engage and educate. Pedometers for the Humana Walkit Challenge can be picked up either at the Humana Well-Being Tour or other easy-to-find locations at each tournament listed above. Humana representatives will demonstrate for pedometer-users how to upload their steps so that the steps count toward that event’s total.
Humana debuted its 2013 Walkit program in January at the Humana Challenge PGA TOUR event in La Quinta, Calif. The Walkit Challenge started last month at the Shell Houston Open, where spectators wearing pedometers uploaded more than 4.7 million steps. Late this year, Humana will announce the winning community of the 2013 Humana Walkit Challenge.
