"It excites us to see that our work with our members and partners in their communities is helping people achieve better health and overall well-being"

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) today released its 2017 Corporate Social Responsibility Progress Report. The report details Humana’s efforts over the past 18 months to achieve its corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals tied to the company’s three CSR pillars: Healthy People, Healthy Planet and Healthy Performance.

Since the start of 2016, Humana and its associates (employees) have made progress in each of these focus areas. For instance, the company’s pursuit of its Bold Goal – to improve the health of the communities Humana serves 20 percent by 2020 – has resulted in more “Healthy Days” in nearly all Bold Goal communities.

“It excites us to see that our work with our members and partners in their communities is helping people achieve better health and overall well-being,” said Humana President and CEO Bruce Broussard. “Our health as a company ties back to the health and well-being of our associates, members and communities where we operate. I’m proud of our associates and the improved health they are working so hard to make happen – for our members and themselves.”

Humana’s new CSR Progress Report features many examples of how Humana is so committed to living its values, particularly ‘Inspire Health.’ From the health metrics Humana tracks to make sure its members’ health is continually improving … to Humana Foundation commitments across the country to invest in community health, the report summarizes progress on the Healthy People front.

Here’s an example from the report:

  • Earlier this year, Humana’s Pharmacy team in Phoenix served diabetes patients beyond Humana’s membership by donating more than 4,500 pounds of diabetic supplies, including insulin syringes, pen needles and test strips, to Insulin for Life USA. In partnership with this organization, Humana delivered insulin and disease-management supplies free of charge to diabetes patients in developing countries who otherwise would likely go without these life-saving provisions.

The report also outlines Humana’s efforts to achieve its Healthy Planet and Healthy Performance goals.

  • Regarding Humana’s overall environmental sustainability focus (Healthy Planet), the report details environmental goals established in 2014, progress to date toward achieving the goals, and how the company and its associates are as dedicated as they have ever been to limit the company’s environmental footprint.
  • Regarding Humana’s Healthy Performance objectives – which address the company’s ethics and compliance, governance, and diversity and inclusion focus – the report includes a number of examples of Humana’s progress since the start of 2016. Here’s one of those examples:
    • Humana created the Executive Physician Immersion Program, a two-year program sponsored by Humana’s Office of the Chief Medical Officer, to give a cohort of physicians with advanced business degrees high-level company exposure and deep organizational experience. “After two years, the goal is to infuse these physicians throughout our company, and, in the future, have them lead our businesses that interact with physician organizations,” said Dr. Roy Beveridge, Chief Medical Officer at Humana.

Also since the start of 2016, Humana has been recognized by multiple outside organizations as a leader not only among health insurers but in all of health care for its corporate citizenship efforts. For instance:

  • RobecoSAM Humana was named the Health Care Providers & Services Industry Leader for its CSR efforts in RobecoSAM’s 2017 Sustainability Yearbook – making this the fourth year in a row Humana received this recognition.
  • Dow Jones Sustainability Index Humana has been included in the Index for 10 consecutive years because of our commitment to sustainable business practices.
  • Human Rights Campaign – Once again this year, Humana received a 100 percent score on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index, which scores companies based on their LGBT inclusion efforts.
  • Newsweek Green Rankings – Humana ranked #18 among U.S. companies in the most recent Newsweek rankings of the top 500 U.S. companies, for its environmental sustainability efforts.
