Humana Surpasses Veteran Hiring Goals, Aims Higher For The Future

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE:HUM) announced today an ongoing commitment to hire an average of 500 veterans and military spouses per year with a focus on hiring wounded warriors, National Guard veterans and veterans with disabilities. The health and well-being company has hired 2,380 veterans and military spouses since 2011, surpassing by nearly 20 percent a goal it set for itself four years ago.

Ted Daywalt, CEO of VetJobs, a company that helps employers reach and employ members of the military community, says that unemployment levels for wounded warriors, disabled veterans, military spouses and National Guard veterans are a particular concern.

“Overall, veterans’ unemployment trends are headed in the right direction, thanks to the dedicated efforts of smart companies like Humana,” said Daywalt. “But unemployment among these subgroups remains two to three times higher than the population as a whole. We need more employers to make concerted efforts to reach out to these patriots as part of their recruiting efforts.”

Humana sees this population as a valuable source of talented, committed and proven employees. To accomplish its hiring goals, Humana has launched a series of internal initiatives and partnered with leading national military service organizations including the White House’s Joining Forces, the Military Spouse Employment Partnership, the Entrepreneurial Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities and many more.

Upon leaving the U.S. Navy in 2011, Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua Isaacs expected his military service would help him find valuable civilian employment. But before joining Humana in 2012, and after nine months on unemployment, he began to feel that his leadership skills and qualifications meant nothing in 2011’s challenging job market. Too many veterans share that feeling today.

“Humana’s had a long and proud commitment to our military and their families through our 19-year relationship with the Department of Defense’s TRICARE program and our recent work with the Veterans Administration to help veterans access health services not available at VA facilities,” said Humana CEO Bruce Broussard. “But our commitment to hiring veterans and their spouses is about much more than just helping veterans. These are highly trained, extremely motivated and thoroughly talented people and they’re a tremendous resource for us.”

Broussard points to an across-the-board organizational commitment and a series of innovative human resources tactics that led to Humana’s success in hiring veterans. The company set up a dedicated veterans hiring website called the Humana Veterans Talent Network expressly for veterans and military spouse applicants. The site allows applicants to receive customized job matches specific to their individual skillset, location and interests.

To assure unwavering commitment to Humana’s efforts, Humana created three key employee groups starting with a dedicated HR recruiting team focused exclusively on military, veteran and military spouse applicants. The team maintains direct communication with applicants, supporting and coaching them on role searches and applications as they work to find a fit within the Fortune 500 Company.

Humana created an enterprise action team to help create strategies and tactics to employ veterans, spouses and wounded warriors throughout the business. This team, comprised of key leaders from across Humana’s many lines of business, meets monthly to monitor and evaluate Humana’s progress toward its veterans hiring goals, address and resolve obstacles, and identify opportunities to improve.

Humana also established the Veterans Network Resource Group to prepare and support veterans and spouses as they transition into the corporate world, help them connect and learn from each other in the workplace, and ensure appropriate planning when a reservist has to be away for training or active duty.
