LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced today that it has taken its pharmacy consumer program, Maximize Your BenefitSM (MYB), to a new level. The new addition to MYB includes an online drug pricing tool that provides Humana members with information they can use to manage their prescription drug costs.

Key features of the tool include real-time, benefit-specific pricing on prescription drugs, choosing a specific pharmacy for quoting prescription drug costs, listing of available generic and/or lower-cost alternative medications, savings potential of switching to an alternative, and savings potential of filling prescriptions through RightSourceSM, Humanas preferred prescription home delivery service.

According to a Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation study, spending for prescription drugs in the United States was more than $200 billion in 2005 and has been one of the fastest-growing components of national healthcare expenditures in recent years. The study also shows that while the use of generic drugs continues to increase, many Americans still dont take advantage of the opportunity to save money by exploring options.

The new capabilities provided online through Maximize Your Benefit enhance the opportunity for consumers to learn about their options with information at their disposal they can use to make an informed choice, said William Fleming, PharmD, vice president of Pharmacy for Humana. These upgrades will further complement our many other outreach efforts as we continue to provide information to our members that is useful and can be put into action.

Humana members also receive guidance about possible savings through personalized letters. The letters include an informative chart that outlines the cost of the members current drug as well as the price of the lowercost alternative. Also in the letter, members are provided with their annual savings by switching to a lower-cost alternative. Other communication channels include secure email, voice-activated secure telephone messages and messaging in the members SmartSummary document. All of these messaging options provide a consumer-friendly alternative to explanations of benefits forms and contain up-to-date medical claims information.

Humana has also expanded its consumer education efforts by making its Humana Health Assessment tool available to anyone, regardless of whether they are Humana members. The assessment, available at www.familyhealthbudget.com, is a basic questionnaire that helps consumers determine their level of health and needed health coverage. In addition, it provides educational content through a library of external, third party resources, and pushes the user forward based on the assessment results.
