DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Recognizing that small, sustained changes to daily habits can lead to big improvements in health, Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) today introduced a program to help small businesses in Colorado motivate their employees to make healthy decisions. The Humana Rewards program is available to employer groups with 2-99 employees in Colorado at no additional charge beginning January 1, 2009.

Humana Rewards helps lead to overall wellness improvements by giving participants guidance to live healthier lives and make better decisions. Participants earn points redeemable for gift cards and merchandise by completing activities that engage them in healthy decision-making, such as health assessments, health coaching and preventive care. The MyHumana personalized portal on Humana.com gives participants a way to track their progress, redeem points and access additional wellness resources.

Humana Rewards uses a sustained, personalized campaign of rewarded activities to encourage healthy decision-making, resulting in behavior changes and increased wellness, said Dan Oftedahl, president of Humana of Colorado. The dynamic program is customized for each participants goals and choices, recognizing personal accomplishments and helping to increase health awareness and engagement in wellness.

While employees participating in the Humana Rewards program benefit from higher wellness engagement, employer groups offering the program also stand to benefit from the program.

We all know healthier employees are more productive employees, and therefore less likely to suffer from presenteeism or be out sick, said Oftedahl. Additionally, employees actively engaged in their wellness are healthier overall, which can lead to lower health insurance costs a win-win situation for the employees and the employers.

The Humana Rewards program was launched in 2008 for fully insured employer groups with more than 100 employees in select markets. However, Humana Rewards in Colorado is the first time the program will be available to small-business employers.
