CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Taste of Chicago is a time to try new and sometimes decadent treats, but without taking the fun out of the Taste, it’s also possible to find healthier choices. After all, not many people want to be munching on carrot and celery sticks when they could be enjoying dishes from some of Chicago’s best restaurants. But, at one of the world’s largest food festivals, there is no need to worry because even the healthy choices have “taste” as a key ingredient.

Today, health benefits company, Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), revealed its list of Humana Healthier Choices at the 2009 Taste of Chicago, highlighting three-course menu options – starters, main entrees and desserts – showing people that it is possible to enjoy an entire meal without loosening the belt.

To this end, Humana is giving away maps that show the locations of the vendors offering each of the Humana Healthier Choices, all of which meet nutritional standards established by a panel of top Chicago-area physicians with expertise in nutrition and diet. Recommended Percent Daily Value of nutrients was also one of the criteria for evaluating menu items. The maps, offered in English and Spanish, can be found online at www.humana.com/tasteofchicago or in-person during the Taste at the Humana Senior Dining Pavilion and Humana’s booth on Columbus Drive just north of Congress Parkway.

“The Taste of Chicago offers plenty of healthy options for those trying to watch their weight or simply eat healthier. The key is to know what to look for,” said Meg Christianson, RN, RD, MPH, CD and Humana Personal Nurse Coach. “Enjoying the Taste is much more fun when you don’t have to worry about feeling guilty about what you eat. Humana’s Healthier Choices helps show people that eating healthy isn’t bland or boring.”

In 2009, the City of Chicago requested that Taste applicants incorporate a healthy item as part of their menu. Humana approached the eateries and asked that they submit nutritional information such as calories, fat and sodium content and ingredients, which were then examined by a panel of health and wellness experts, including Dr. Samuel Grief, associate professor of Clinical Family Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago; Dr. Robert F. Kushner, clinical director of the Northwestern University Comprehensive Center on Obesity; Dr. Annabelle S. Volgman, associate professor of medicine and medical director at the Heart Center for Women at Rush University Medical Center; and, registered dietitian Meg Christianson from Humana.

Each starter and dessert has approximately 250 calories or less, and each main entrée has approximately 500 calories or less. All Healthier Choices menu options meet certain sodium and saturated fat levels established by the expert physician panel. Restaurants that did not provide complete nutritional data were not evaluated by the physician panel.
