Public Company Information:

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Three Maricopa County charitable organizations have been selected as finalists for consideration of a one-time, $100,000 grant in the 2007 Arizona Benefits charity program, created and funded by The Humana Foundation and health benefits company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM). The annual awards program selects a local, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization to receive a grant in order to create new programs or enhance ongoing activities to benefit the mind, body or spirit of the greater Phoenix area residents.

The $100,000 grant will be awarded to the winning charity at the Arizona Benefits Celebration and Dinner at 6 p.m. on November 15 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa.

Arizona Benefits allows Humana to recognize and make a meaningful, positive impact to a charity working to better the mind, body and spirit of Maricopa County residents, said Jeff Montag, president of Commercial Products for Humana of Arizona. This is our first year awarding the Arizona Benefits grant, and we look forward to many more years helping local charities better serve Maricopa County.

Humana narrowed down the pool of applicants to three finalists, with each finalist addressing the improvement of the mind, body or spirit through its work. A panel of judges comprised of business and community leaders then evaluated presentations from each of the finalists to select a recipient of the $100,000 grant. The finalists included:

  • Aid to Adoption of Special Kids (AASK) prepares prospective foster and adoptive families to care for special needs foster children, helping to provide children with loving homes and caring families. If awarded the grant, AASK plans to improve the spirits of foster children by funding the creation of the Childrens Library and Learning Center in the new West Valley Family Connections Center, giving children a safe place to interact and education activities that encourage learning.
  • The Mesa Association of Sports for the Disabled (MASD) is dedicated to proving sports and recreation to individuals with any type of disability, including a Special Olympics program for those with intellectual disabilities and Arizona Heat Physically Challenged Programs for those with physical disabilities. Addressing improvement of the body, if selected as the Arizona Benefits recipient, MASD plans to purchase vehicles to transport all necessary sports equipment in order to give athletes more opportunities to participate in sports and competitions.
  • Maricopa Health Foundation (MHF) supports the Maricopa Integrated Health System by helping education parents and children about the danger of burns and improving the welfare of those children hospitalized for burns. If MHF is selected the award recipient, the organization plans to use the grant to distribute early literacy burn and fire prevention books and flash cards offering tips to prevent injuries.
