Humana Healthier Choices Guide Dishes Out Record Number of Healthy Options at 2012 Taste of Chicago

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--At this year’s Taste of Chicago, millions of foodies will be able to enjoy the best of the Taste while doing right by their health and well-being as Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) offers the most robust list of Humana Healthier Choices than ever before. The fifth annual Humana Healthier Choices guide will feature 27 appetizers, main courses and desserts from 15 Chicago restaurants at the nation’s largest food festival.

A five-year sponsor of the event, Humana is also serving up a wider array of health and well-being offerings at the Taste this year, including the Humana Race to Taste and Healthier Choices after party, Humana Dining Pavilion featuring the Biondi Boomer Bash, the Humana Well-Being Tour and a healthy cooking demonstration in partnership with Shedd Aquarium. The 2012 Taste of Chicago runs from July 11 to 15 in Chicago’s Grant Park.

“Taste of Chicago is a welcome tradition for thousands of foodies, as dozens of local restaurants serve up their favorite dishes each year,” said Deborah Gracey, president of Humana’s Medicare Great Lakes Region. “By incorporating various health and well-being components into the festival and providing the Humana Healthier Choices guide, we are helping Taste-goers to be healthy while enjoying the foods and having fun.”

The Humana Healthier Choices are indicated by a green apple on the menu boards at participating restaurant booths. Taste-goers can also use the free Humana Healthier Choices guide available at www.humana.com/tasteofchicago, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/humana.tasteofchicago, distributed at the Humana Dining Pavilion and handed out by Apple Man, the Humana Healthier Choices mascot.

All of the restaurants participating in the 2012 Taste of Chicago were invited to submit menu items for consideration in the Humana Healthier Choices guide. For an item to be considered, restaurants must submit nutritional information including calories, sodium content, saturated fat and the list of ingredients.

Each submission was reviewed by a panel of top Chicago-area physicians with expertise in nutrition and diet, including Amy Hess Fischl, MS, RD, LDN, BC-ADM, CDE, an advanced practice dietitian and coordinator for the University of Chicago, Kovler Diabetes Center; Carrie E. Nelson, M.D., Medical Director for Special Projects, Advocate Health Partners; Katherine Tynus, M.D., FACP, Transitional Year Program Director, Academic Director, Internal Medicine, MacNeal Hospital; and, Fredrik Tolin, M.D., medical director and vice president for Humana of Illinois.

Lace up for the Humana Race to Taste Twilight Run

In an effort to promote the importance of staying fit, Humana is proud to be the returning title sponsor of the 20th Annual Humana Race to Taste 5K Run/2-Mile Walk. This year, the Humana Race to Taste will be a twilight run kicking off at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 12 at Queens Landing, located directly on Chicago’s lakefront, across Lake Shore Drive from Buckingham Fountain.

Following the race along the lakefront and Grant Park, all participants are invited to the Humana Race to Taste after party where complimentary samples of the Humana Healthier Choice items will be available. Also at the after party, race participants can learn more about HumanaVitality, a comprehensive wellness solution that incentivizes people to make healthier choices by rewarding healthy behaviors. As a tie-in to Humana’s Healthier Choices promotion at the Taste, HumanaVitality will be providing tips and information on living healthy. Those interested in participating in the race can sign up online until Thursday, July 5. All participants will receive a commemorative event T-shirt, goody bag and one complimentary strip of Taste tickets.

Humana Dining Pavilion to Host Biondi Boomer Bash, Free Activities and Entertainment throughout Festival

Humana is teaming up with Shedd Aquarium for a cooking demonstration to showcase their “Right Bite” program, which highlights the importance of choosing environmentally friendly seafood. All are invited to watch the live demonstration, taking place on Friday, July 13 at 11:30 a.m. Held on the main Cooking Corner stage, Shedd Aquarium’s Seafood Coordinator, Brooke Havlik, will walk the audience through preparing a healthy cornmeal crusted catfish with apple-beet slaw.

On Saturday, July 14, Taste-goers are invited to tear up the dance floor at the Biondi Boomer Bash presented by Humana. The event will begin with a live broadcast from WLS-FM at 10 a.m. followed by a sock-hop with the legendary Dick Biondi from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. where guests can dance to music from the 50s and 60s.

Taste-goers can also rest and enjoy complimentary water at the Humana Dining Pavilion located at Buckingham Fountain. Throughout the five day festival, attendees can participate in free dance lessons, Humana SilverSneakers fitness classes geared for seniors, and various health and wellness programs and information.

Humana Well-Being Tour Stops at Taste

The Humana Well-Being Tour will be making its debut in Illinois with a stop at the Taste of Chicago. First launched in January 2012 at the Humana Challenge in Palm Springs, Calif., the Humana Well-Being Tour is traveling across the country to provide people with a fresh perspective on healthy living.

The Humana Well-Being Tour features an interactive XBox Kinect station where guests can play the “Your Shape” game; four biometric screenings that provide personalized results; and, a photo booth area where visitors can take a picture that photo shops them into an inspirational feat. Taste-goers will also have the opportunity to receive a free pedometer, compliments of the Humana WalkIt program and take an on-site health assessment, courtesy of HumanaVitality. The Well-Being Tour will be located on Congress Parkway from the hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day throughout Taste of Chicago.
