SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Utah charities are invited to apply for a $100,000 grant in the Humana Communities Benefit - Utah charitable-award program sponsored by health-benefits company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM).

The program is open to 501(c)(3) organizations located in the state of Utah focused on improving health experiences or building healthy communities in the areas of:

  • Childhood health and education – Projects or initiatives that seek to improve health and academic achievement of children through the educational landscape
  • Family wellness and active lifestyles – Projects or initiatives that strengthen the health of families through physical, social, mental, emotional, or environmental support
  • Health literacy for diverse populations and seniors – Projects or initiatives dedicated to improving people’s ability to access, understand, and use health information, especially low income populations, and seniors

“The economy has left many of the nation’s nonprofit organizations struggling for financial support to keep up with the increased demand of those in need,” said Earl F. Hurst, president of Humana’s Utah commercial operations. “Through our commitment to these nonprofit organizations, Humana hopes to inspire others – individual donors and corporations – to lend a hand to the organizations that make a difference in promoting healthy lives and a healthy community.”

This is the third year Humana has sponsored the charitable-awards program in Utah. The goal of this $100,000 contribution to a nonprofit in each eligible location is to make a positive, transformational impact on the organization that allows it to reach greater milestone goals.

Applications from eligible nonprofit organizations are being accepted now through Friday, June 25. A panel of local judges, comprised of community leaders, public officials and business representatives, will work with Humana to select the $100,000 grant winner. Finalists will make a formal presentation before the panel of community-leader judges. The winner will be announced at a celebratory dinner Friday, October 8.

The Utah Benefits charitable awards program began two years ago and awarded $100,000 grants to Kids On The Move, a nonprofit organization fostering the physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth of young children with special needs; and to The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome, a nationwide nonprofit with a chapter in Utah, which helps prevent the shaking and abuse of infants through its educational program for new parents, the Period of PURPLE Crying program.
