LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) has been named the top “major payer” among U.S. health insurers based on a review of 2011 claims-payment data conducted by athenahealth, a leading provider of cloud-based practice-management, Electronic Health Record and care-coordination services to medical groups. Humana has held the number one position among major payers in three of the last four years and four times since the inception of athenahealth’s annual rankings.

athenahealth’s PayerView Rankings are derived from the company’s cloud-based medical billing and practice-management service, athenaCollector, and measure health insurers in areas of financial performance, administrative performance, and transaction efficacy. PayerView seeks to provide an objective, quantitative measure of providers’ “ease of doing business” with individual payers by aggregating the activity of 33,000 health care providers, reviewing 65 million transactions and $12 billion in charges.

“Humana and its associates focus every day on delivering perfect service – it’s at the core of who we are as a company,” said Bruce Perkins, President of Humana’s Health and Well-Being Services segment. “We at Humana are dedicated to continually improving service and satisfaction for health care providers and our Humana members. Among major payers, being the easiest for providers to do business with – as highlighted by our number one ranking for Major Payers – is very important to us.”

athenahealth PayerView Humana highlights include:

  • Humana had the best performing electronic remittance advice (ERA) transparency rate among national commercial payers
  • Humana continued to exhibit strong transaction performance by maintaining the best eligibility accuracy result among major payers and national commercial payers
  • Bucking the market trend, Humana decreased its provider collection burden rate

Outside of PayerView, Humana vigorously tracks key claims-payment metrics that are important to providers. And the company is proud of its claims-performance record, summarized below:

  • More than 99 percent of all claims paid within 30 days
  • 91 percent of all claims paid within 14 days
  • Electronic claim submission rate of 89 percent

Data for the 2011 PayerView rankings were derived from athenahealth’s athenaNet® system database. Complete data from the study can be found online at www.athenahealth.com/payerview.
