LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced today the latest steps the company is taking to make it possible for fully insured and Medicare members impacted by recent flooding or tornadoes to use their benefits without a disruption in service.

Since early June, several states and or the federal government have declared disaster areas in parts of Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

In any county recently declared a disaster area, Humana has taken, or is taking, the following steps for its impacted members who live in these counties:

  • Allowing early prescription refills, through July 2 Humana has temporarily lifted the normal 30-day prescription-refill restriction for its impacted Medicare, insured commercial-group and individual plan members.
  • Delaying cancellations and non-renewals Any cancellation or non-renewal notice issued to an impacted insured member on or after June 1, 2008, has been or will be withdrawn, with no lapse in coverage. These members will remain with Humana until August 18, 2008, or later, if deemed reasonable given the members circumstance.
  • Other time-period extensions Impacted insured members will receive an extension of any and all policy provisions or other requirements that impose a time limit for the member to perform any act, including the submission of a claim, reporting of information, submission of bills, or payment of funds. Such extensions are for a minimum of 60 days from the last date allowed or required under terms of the contract, or allowed or required by Humana (or longer, if deemed reasonable given the members circumstance).
  • Other exceptions to company policy or contract requirements Humana will consider exemptions to policy or contract requirements, or to other rating or underwriting rules not listed above, when such contractual requirements or rating or underwriting rules are not met as a result of this disaster. Example: Benefits for impacted insured members who are displaced from their home and who do not have access to in-network health care providers will be administered as if the services are occurring in network.

Humana members impacted by the recent flooding or tornadoes who have needs or questions about their benefits or their eligibility for these provisions are encouraged to call the customer service number on the back of their Humana ID card. Any members who have lost their cards may call the numbers below to be connected with a customer-service representative:

  • Humana Medicare medical-plan members: 1-800-457-4708
  • Humana Medicare prescription-drug-plan only members: 1-800-281-6918
  • Commercial group or individual members: 1-800-4HUMANA (1-800-448-6262)
