Humana Veterans Healthcare Services Sponsors Rolling Thunder XXII in Washington, D.C.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Veterans Healthcare Services announces its sponsorship of Rolling Thunder XXII held Memorial Day Weekend, May 22-24, 2009 in Washington, D.C. Rolling Thunder is an event held annually to raise awareness and support for veterans including prisoners of war and those missing in action.

“Rolling Thunder serves as a reminder to all Americans of the courage and sacrifices made by the men and women of our military while protecting and defending the freedoms we enjoy everyday,” said Al Poteet, president and CEO of Humana Veterans. “It is an honor to support this weekend and this worthy cause.”

Members of Rolling Thunder will ride motorcycles to various events held throughout the city, including a wreath presentation at the Historic Congressional Cemetery, a candle light vigil at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, a wreath presentation at the U.S. Navy Memorial, as well as a keynote speech by Colonel Michael D. Steele, U.S. Army, at the Reflecting Pool across from the Lincoln Memorial. Steele was a company commander in the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment during the Somalia mission Operation Gothic Serpent, which resulted in the now famous book and movie Black Hawk Down, in which he was portrayed by actor Jason Isaacs.

Incorporated in 1995, Rolling Thunder is a non-profit organization with over 88 chartered chapters throughout the United States. Members volunteer at local VA hospitals nationwide and provide moral support to nursing home veterans and patients suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In 2007, Rolling Thunder Charities, Inc. was established to provide financial aid, food, clothing and other essentials to veterans, homeless veterans and veterans’ families in need.
