Public Company Information:

BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The 24 million Americans with diabetes, plus another 57 million with pre-diabetes*, now have a trusted educator in Sensei’s My Diabetes Guidemobile phone application. One of the first programs of its kind, My Diabetes Guide™ takes patients step-by-step through the keys to healthy living with diabetes. The user’s mobile device now informs a patient about what to do, what to know, what to eat, and what to ask their doctors, as it personally guides him or her to better diabetes self-management. All content is downloaded directly to the mobile phone in a well organized, user-friendly manner. The iPod touch and iPhone application is now available for download at the App Store in iTunes (http://www.itunes.com/apps/SenseiMyDiabetesGuide) for just 99 cents. My Diabetes Guide™ will soon be available on other mobile phones as well.

The application was designed by Sensei, a wholly owned subsidiary of Humana, Inc. (NYSE:HUM) in collaboration with the world renowned Joslin Diabetes Center, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Sensei is a leading innovator in mobile and web programs that empower individuals to improve their health and well being.

My Diabetes Guide™ goes beyond blood glucose tracking and nutritional information research. It is a comprehensive tool that takes patients, and those involved in their care, one screen at a time through all fundamentals of diabetes management. Physicians, dietitians, and diabetes educators from Joslin reviewed the diabetes content, and our tech experts built an application that gives users the best chance to succeed in the evolving person-centric healthcare system,” said Dr. Robert Schwarzberg, cardiologist and chief executive officer, Sensei, Inc.

Dr. Jonathan Lord, M.D., Humana’s chief innovation officer, says My Diabetes Guide™ “empowers people to play an active role in their own treatment, thus increasing the likelihood that they can delay or avoid long-term complications – such as cardiovascular disease – linked to diabetes. In working with Joslin, we have developed this unique approach to diabetes care which represents a significant advancement linking health care, technology and people with diabetes.”

“We at Joslin are exploring every avenue to improve the self-management capabilities of people with diabetes,” said Martin Abrahamson, MD, medical director of Joslin. “With the proliferation of mobile phones in America, we believe this is an important avenue to reach people with diabetes.”

Improved Medication Compliance

With daily and weekly reminders, the My Diabetes Guide™ user should be less likely to have the stress of everyday life interfere with the regular self-management tasks to be performed.

Prompted to complete a list of “To Dos” such as monitor glucose levels, take medications, and check feet and weight, the user develops a consistently positive behavior pattern. Patients can also log their data immediately into the program to ensure an accurate, timely recording of vital statistics.

Enhanced Doctor-Patient Relationship

My Diabetes Guide™ helps to prepare the person with diabetes for doctors’ visits with a thorough checklist of items to bring, questions to ask the medical team, and what to expect at a check-up. The “To Know” screen teaches users to effectively communicate with their physicians and develop a productive working relationship.

“Research shows that there is a gap between what diabetes patients know to do and what they actually execute. Similarly, research shows that patients tend to overstate the things they know they should do and underestimate the problem areas. We close those gaps with simple to follow, always-with-you information that consistently influences the user to make positive choices,” said Dr. Schwarzberg.

Educational Resources at Patient’s Disposal

Until now patients have had to research additional information about diabetes through websites, books, pamphlets, or other print materials. My Diabetes Guide™, however, delivers the information directly to the user’s mobile phone. The “To Know” section provides convenient access to a clear, simple understanding of the signs and symptoms, risk factors, long term complications, and ways to live with diabetes.

The “To Eat” screen teaches users how to make smart nutrition decisions. With information on carbohydrates, portion size, and food labels, the person with diabetes has immediate access to guidelines to help them make healthier meal choices at any time.
