Public Company Information:

"Summa’s breadth of world-class medical services combined with their ability to coordinate the care patients receive across those services makes them a perfect accountable care partner for us"

AKRON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Improved health and more coordinated services for the growing number of Humana Medicare Advantage (MA) members in Akron is the goal behind a new Accountable Care agreement between Summa Health System’s accountable care organization (ACO) – NewHealth Collaborative – and Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM).

Accountable care is a fast-growing model for health care service delivery and health care provider payment. The model focuses on creating health in addition to treating sickness, utilizes the primary care physician to coordinate care for the patient, offers treatment options based on proven standards of care and better controls costs through integrated care and reimbursement based on adherence to standards of care.

The new Summa-Humana accountable care agreement includes value-based incentives tied to performance improvement that is expected to enable better patient care coordination, more cost effective, quality care and a world-class patient experience to Humana members throughout Northeastern Ohio.

The value-based arrangement will offer more personalized care and a broad range of population management tools like, predictive analytics and chronic care, disease management and wellness programs. It also emphasizes quality outcomes with a focus on care coordination and leverages measures as defined by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) for things such as diabetes care and treatment, breast cancer screenings, colorectal cancer screenings and high-risk medication.

Humana, one of the country’s leading health and well-being companies, has quickly grown its Northeast Ohio membership in recent years. Humana has become a strong national accountable care player by working closely with doctors and hospitals through its Accountable Care Continuum. The continuum is a stepped approach to pay-for-value reimbursement that allows Humana to implement different accountable care approaches with physicians based on each groups’ practice complexity and infrastructure capabilities.

Summa Health System is one of the largest integrated health care delivery systems in Ohio, serving more than a million patients each year. NewHealth Collaborative has shown significant improvement in its patients’ health during the past 18 months. As a result, it is the only ACO in Ohio to save money from its participation in the Medicare Shared Savings Program.

“Summa’s breadth of world-class medical services combined with their ability to coordinate the care patients receive across those services makes them a perfect accountable care partner for us,” said Larry Costello, president of Humana Senior Products in Ohio. “The accountable care model is about creating better care through integrated care delivery and outcomes-based payment systems.”

“We’re very pleased to enter into this partnership with Humana because it underscores the importance we place on moving Summa from a hospital company to a population health management company,” said Dr. Mark Terpylak, president of NewHealth Collaborative. “We look forward to building additional partnerships throughout the community that allow us to continue to treat the whole patient while creating better outcomes and lowering the cost of care.”
